How To Build A Business At The Speed Of Culture
2021 Feels Like It Could Be The Renaissance + Roaring 20's + Summer Of Love Combined
Kairos 2021
The Greeks measured time two ways. The first is Chronos which is where we get the word chronology and refers to sequential time. The second word the ancient Greeks used is Kairos which signifies a proper or opportune time for action. As I closed down the year of 2020 I began a study on the concept of time inspired by a sermon I once heard in Atlanta. Kairos is a “defining moment” and something I try to interpret. Here are my notes from both my January study and several rooms we hosted on Clubhouse on this subject.
Kairos is a time that requires conversion from people
Kairos is a dangerous time because if you allow it to pass the loss is immeasurable (Luke 19:44)
Kairos is opportunity
You can’t schedule a defining moment
There is a due date for everything God has given you
You can become intoxicated by your own potential
You have to be dissatisfied with what you have already accomplished
I feel every single part of my Kairos moment. While I miss working out of my favorite magic spaces and places (see Soho House Malibu photo above) I recognize that my new domestic life affords many advantages. As a practice of surrender I even shifted my “New Year’s Day” to February. I also built in several blocks of playtime in my schedule which is a vital component to experiencing Kairos. You can look back on your life and recognize those Kairos moments of your past or as my friend Catherine Connors likes to say “when things become Kairotic.” I hope you get a chance to revisit the subject of time and would love to hear from you.
I can not imagine a crazier time than the year we just experienced in 2020. For the most part, many of our businesses were affected by COVID 19, and the stay-at-home orders made life super challenging for parents, executives, kids, and dogs. I have been checking in with The Authenticated members, and many in our community remained in a state of what they called "thriving and surviving." Many of us had massive economic hits, some of us were in the hospital, and far too many of us had to say goodbye to loved ones often times and unfortunately over Zoom. There were many nights I can remember in March at the start of the first pandemic and in May during the "second pandemic" of US social injustice that if not for The Authenticated community, I would have been in bad shape. The Authenticated members shared with me that they felt they survived 2020 because of these community features.
Community > Audience: For so many years in social media, we have been chasing false metrics like followers, likes, and pokes. Full of the wrong points, none of those metrics equate to a dedicated community. The real community looks different and is generally not based on the same value system as social media and its self-centered metrics. At The Authenticated we believe a community is a group or cohort on a journey together to accomplish something or change the world, maybe even both. Our community is the entrepreneurs, founders, investors, and dreamers creating the change in the world we want to see
Opportunities: As we spent time with our community members, we found out the types of needs that we thought our network could support. So that's what we did. We helped because we know how to make things happen, and the riches are actually in our network.
A CMO needed to hire an agency, and we knew where to find them.
An entrepreneur had parts of an idea, and we helped her scale it.
An athlete was looking for a strategy for a deal he was negotiating, and we helped develop.
A family office wanted to build a virtual conference; we made the entire team and ran it.
A founder was looking for funding; we helped her find investors, many of whom were in The Authenticated.
George Clinton wanted to talk about spaceships and his artwork; we put him on our weekly show on Clubhouse.
Events: We were known for our dinners in Malibu, Stockholm, Detroit, and Rio. Our recipe for transformation is creating the rooms where the magic happens. Imagine how we felt trying to translate that into Zoom. The testing and experimentation made us better organizers, builders and moderators. We became better at replicating the experiences we used to develop in real-life events through online and virtual experiences. At the end of the year, we virtually hosted 100 “Jeffersonian dinners,” 10 DJ sets, and four virtual summits that featured speakers from around the world. While the content was stellar, we also really mastered how to bring together a real community during the pandemic. We learned that getting 8-12 people requires something completely different than 200. Today in spaces and venues that we have built-in Twitch, Topia, Mighty Networks, and Clubhouse, we make the room where things happen.
Love & Trust: We built the community we couldn't find anywhere else in the world. Sometimes you get to a place where if the product, service, or movement doesn't exist, you have to build it yourself. The Authenticated was born four years ago at a point in my career when I recognized that my network was my net worth. The most effective way to create an impact on the planet was to share freely with my community the network, process, inspirations that I have acquired over a 25 yr career. Our superpower is recognizing that if you want to go far, go together.
Here's how you can get started. I would love to have you join us on this next journey and season.
